Let me start off first with a couple questions to my fellow dispatchers. Have you ever looked at your console and said, “That’s it, I’m done?” Or turned to your partner and noticed they were struggling and you didn’t know what to do or say to help them? You’re not alone. And that’s one of the driving forces behind this book. To let all dispatchers and call-takers know you’re not alone. There is help—in many forms. As you journey through these pages, you will meet several people who have been touched by the 9-1-1 dispatch profession. Some of these people are, or have been, dispatchers themselves. Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement
This book addresses the dynamics that can transform within a matter of a few years, idealistic and committed law enforcement officers/employees into cynical, angry individuals who begin having difficulties in both the personal and professional aspects of their lives. It points out how law enforcement personnel develop a social perceptual set that can potentially see employees engaging in inappropriate behavior patterns and decision-making that leads to both administrative and can unfortunately in some personnel lead to criminal difficulties. The basic theme and goal of the book is to provide information that lets the officer/employee see how the deterioration process can take place and what specific preventative strategies can be employed to reduce the negative emotional impact of a law enforcement career.
From the author: My motivation for writing Always, Only Good has been multi-purposed: to share my son’s journey because of my great love for him; to give others gazing from the sidelines a snapshot view into the life of someone living with mental illness and thereby help them be better supporters; to impart how I personally discovered God is good through and because of mental illness; and to assure those dealing with mental illness that they are not alone.
